Illustrations…
Here is a bit of insight into to how I illustrated picture book Hide and Seek with Grandpa. (Written by Ed Allen, Published by Scholastic Australia, 2018)

My character for Grandpa didn’t start as a lion!
Here are some other animal characters I played around with….

Once we decided what animal Grandpa would be, my sketchbook became filled with lions.

Then we needed to decide on his colours… not too young, not too old… but JUST RIGHT!

My first lot of roughs spread over my loungeroom floor, my cat Friday wasn’t the least bit interested.

I continued to play with ideas on my iPad

Once the final roughs were approved, I began the artwork using watercolour ,

And pencils…

After stretching all the watercolour paper of course…

I also came up wiht extra bits and pieces to be added digitally, just in case!

And of course not forgetting the end paper designs – luckily I didn’t have to choose which one!

And of course – the front cover!

Ready or not, here I go!
Come and find me, Grandpa!
Am I hiding high or low?
Where could I be?
Keep looking all around the park!
It is so much fun playing hide and seek with Grandpa!
